HAIRSPRAY THE MUSICAL

HERE WE BRING YOU THE ADAPTATION OF THE MUSICAL HAIRSPRAY

This time we want to talk to you about Hairspray the Musical. Definitely a happy musical, with a lot of dancing and singing that will test the voices of our actors and actresses.

A musical with a message that seems to be for our time and not the 60s.

WHY DID WE DO IT?

Our theatre school children were getting older and so, this time we let them choose which musical they would like to perform. They chose Hairspray, so we got down to work and started adapting both the text and the songs that had to be included the adapted script.

As always, our adapted play does not include every scene or song of the original play. We do this to reduce the time the young actors have to spend studying the play and so that the final performance lasts between 1:15 and 1:30 hours. In the end, we all have to have a good time, (Hairspray is a very cheerful and fun play), the actors and actresses, the audience and obviously us, who always want to enjoy setting up whatever play we do. So, we leave behind any stress and set out to achieve our objective.

The play is designed to be performed by young people from ages 12-13 to 16-17. It is not easy for them, since it is a stage of life where embarrassment occurs more easily and because it is a play full of dancing, singing and complex feelings between characters sometimes it does not come out as natural as you would like it to. Nonetheless, the result was very good.

A MESSAGE OF INCLUSION AND SOLIDARITY

This play, due to its plot and message, could be perfectly transferred to our time. Diversity, immigration, integration, are words we hear constantly today. This work deals with all these issues in a serious way whilst at the same time being fun and friendly.

HOW WE DID IT

In many occasions, the stage is divided into two spaces, on the right, Tracy and Edna’s house and on the left, either the high school or the TV show. Whenever one is in action, the other has the lights dimmed. Sometimes while the scene is on the right, there is also action on the left but in dimmed light.

There are many dance scenes in which the characters interact and dialogue so it is important to have wireless microphones so that they can speak while dancing.

One of the songs (The Boys of the City) sounds several times during the play since it is the TV show’s tune. Every time it sounds is included in the list of topics we provide, so you don’t need to worry.

The play has a total of 15 characters, some with a bigger part than others. As always, we distribute the characters with a bigger role across two actors or actresses so we get more involvement and a greater participation of the group. If possible, it’s a good idea to include more actors, without any lines, in the dances and some of high school scenes like the gym or the punishment room.

DRAWINGS

As you may know, we hardly use scenery, instead we project drawings in order to fill the scene in a figurative way and provide the audience with a better understanding of the scene.

However, in this occasion, we did not use drawings. We only used some elements made out of stone cardboard so we could represent some elements of the scenography like the prison and the posters of both the institute and the Motormouth record store. The lighting of the different spaces helped us a lot to set the different scenes.

But, don’t worry, we provide you with all the rest of the material!

Remember that you have all the following material available:
Lyrics of songs in Catalan, script adapted to the children’s age you need, musical bases for each song, instrumental music to accompany some scenes, and audios of some songs sung with the original voice from our representations to guide you when you interpret them (in this case only two of them because the rest were done in English).

If you have any questions just ask us at info@teatromusicalinfantil.com, or fill out the form at the end of this post.

HAIRSPRAY’S SCRIPT

It is composed of nearly every original scene. We may have shortened a part a little because it was not important for the general argument and reduced the script which helps the children when memorizing.

The script of the characters is reduced enough so that they don’t have too much work memorizing since they also have to dance and sing.

Below, I leave you with a small sample of the script. And here is a link to the page where you will find more information on the musical and test audios of the songs.

Ahh, I almost forgot!!! Do not hesitate to ask us any questions you may have through the comments in this post.
